RSS Feeds

I finally discovered the amazing value of RSS Feeds today.

So far, I've stayed away from them, mostly because I didn't really understand what RSS meant. I also really like visiting all my favorite blogs because of the unique user experience you get with different backgrounds, seeing other commenters, and seeing what blogs they subscribe to.

However, I've reached a point in my blog reading in which I do not have the time or patience to visit each individual blog regularly. I discovered that an RSS feed is a super-easy way to make 1 "super-blog" with all the recent blogposts from your favorite blogs. If only someone had explained this to me earlier...

I just set up all my favorite blogs with their RSS feed links in Google Reader. You should too if you haven't already! A key point of advice: go through each blog and select "mark as read", this way you will only have future posts in your inbox.

Check out Medpedia

I wrote about this Medpedia a while back when it was in Beta, well now it's launched so you should check it out.

It has 3 main objectives:
1. Be the go-to website for accurate medical information (Edited by physicians only)
2. Social networking site for medical professionals (View my roommate's profile here)
3. Create online disease/illness/health interest communities

Pretty awesome idea, I definitely joined and I encourage you to do so as well.

Wireless Charging System

Someone recently scoffed at my idea that we don't need all these cords to charge our various electronics (ipods, cell phones, digital cameras, camcorders etc). Well to that person I say HA! Look at this really neat device:
It's the Powermat wireless charging system and it'll be selling for $99 next Fall. I'm going to hold out for version 2 though because I don't want to have to use their special case on my electronics. I love inventors that care about solving design and storage issues that irritate me. Not only does it get rid of all those obtrusive cords but it also keeps all my little gadgets in one place, even with a place for keys and a wallet. Brilliant. No more scrambling around last minute for everything!

OpenSource Podcast Generator

This free software allows you to create your own podcast. I haven't tried it out yet, but this might be my next new venture. You can create audio/video podcasts and then upload them to itunes! I'm not sure what topic I would I would have a podcast about..Any ideas? What would you make your own podcast about?

Medpedia -Shout out to Andrea!

I am so proud of my roommate Andrea. She just started her first day at her new job, she'll be working for Medpedia this next year. I, (and others vastly more qualified then I to think so) think this could really be a disruptive technology that changes the way medical information works. Transparency in medical information is such a tiring issue that needs to be laid to rest, and I think that Medpedia can really be the dealbreaker that will be able to provide patients and care providers with excellent medical information across a huge range of diseases and ailments.


I'm so excited for you Andrea and I'm looking forward to hearing about the triumphs and roadblocks of this great start up!

Podcasts are still hot

And video podcasts on my iPhone are even hotter!

I have some favorites that I thought I'd share:

Medical Spanish, by Molly Martin
Dr. Martin gives clear, 10 minute podcasts that include vocabulary, a doctor-patient interaction, and English/Spanish translation practice. I LOVE IT!

WNYC's Radio Lab
Witty, entertaining, and educational, I can't get enough of these hour-long podcasts. I've learned about the opera The Ring, Archeology, Memory, really interesting, I'm always intrigued and want to know more after one of these!

Pilates Center of Bend Video Podcast
Short clips of different pilates techniques, it's great because I download them on my iPhone and do my pilates in the gym.

These are my favorites so far, now that I have video podcast capabilities, I'm going to do a lot more searching in iTunes U for some cool video classes. Let me know about your favorite podcasts!

Yes, It's true, I discovered the world of podcasting yesterday. It's now my new obsession.

Will update with some of the podcasts I downloaded. SO COOL!

My TECH Wish List

On a more materialistic note, I've begun to make a list of items I would like to own to further my interest in photography and videography. My current digital camera is not cutting it for me, I run through AA batteries like they are an endangered species. The other problem with my photos is that my family has green eyes, and thus we all look like frightening demons in all our photos, only Ms. Adobe can conquer the demons in my life, iphoto makes us look like zombies, not much better.
In other tech news, I made my second movie ever last night (the first being the Amazing Race tape), and I was sad to see how my camera shots bounced around and gave me motion sickness. Which was great for the Blair Witch part, not so great for the other parts. Thus, I have created a Tech Wish List.

• Digital Camera, minimum 8.0 megapixels, with continuous shooting capability. Right now my favorite is the Canon PowerShot 8.0-Megapixel Digital ELPH Camera

• Tripod, must be portable & fit in a backpack, must be compatible with my digital camera and video camera

• Adobe Photo Shop, newest version
  

• Final Cut Pro 6, amazing video editing software
  

• External Hard Drive, required to store all of these photos and videos I'm creating

• iphone = INCREDIBLE
